Rodner Figueroa is currently suffering the repercussions of his controversial comment about a make up artist's depiction of First Lady Michelle Obama which resulted to the termination of the TV host from Univision.
Though Figueroa is facing what may be the biggest challenge of his career, several celebrities and TV personalities are expressing their support for the ill-fated anchor, which included "That's So Raven" star Raven Symone, Jacky Bracamontes, Raúl De Molina, Cristián De La Fuente, and Ana Brenda Contreras, according to Latin Times.
In her appearance as a guest co-host on "The View," Symone insisted that Figueroa's remark wasn't racist and that "some people look like animals," Fox News Latino reports.
The comment from Symone came after "The View" host Rosie Perez stated that she supports Univision's decision to fire Figueroa because his statement was racist.
"A lot of Latin people recognize the fact that we do have African blood in us. A lot of them do not want to recognize that fact, and that's where this stems from," Perez said on the show, as quoted by Fox News Latino. "There is a secret in the Latin community, specifically the Caribbean, South American, Central American, Latin community, that they are very racist. They never want to be in the same group as black people. And it's sad."
Comments went back and forth between Symone and Perez after that, with the former going on Twitter to explain her point. In a series of tweets, she wrote: "Some comments are rude, some are disrespectful, and some are racist. Try to not exchange one for the other." She added: "My opinion/comments [aren't] based off race, that doesn't mean i'm trying to be a different race all together. I love OUR history, family...."
Bobby Pulido, like Symone, thinks Figueroa's statement wasn't racist and that the TV host is "an excellent human being," as translated by Latin Times. Gaby Espino added that "we have all made a mistake," while De Molina posted a snapshot of him and Figueroa with the caption: "because everything in life can't be happiness, my friend, Rodner Figueroa."
Figueroa replied to all of the sweet messages of support he received on Twitter. Latin Times wrote that he was also dropped by Colgate as spokesperson.
The TV host was in hot water when, during a live episode of "El Gordo y La Flaca," he stated that Paolo Ballesteros' makeup transformation of Obama made her look "like she was from the cast of 'Planet of the Apes,'" Fox News Latino noted.
Since then, Figueroa issued a public apology directed to the First Lady, saying that he takes full responsibility for the error in his judgment. However, he thinks that his termination from the TV network is unfair. Figueroa worked for 17 years in Univision.
