Most people still remember Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane in the 1999 film adaptation of "Sleepy Hollow" and whether he did a great job playing a crazy investigator or Fox's adaptation of the story of the Headless Horseman just did not appeal to as much audience, you really can't tell.

Fortunately, despite the dipping ratings, the network still refused to give the series the axe, as New York Daily News confirmed that the sci-fi time-traveling take on the old story has been renewed for a third season, with Fox promising that it will have a different tone and feel compared to the first two years on air.

As part of the series overhaul, Mark Goffman is said to be replaced as showrunner by Cliffton Campbell, whose resume included creating and executive producing "The Glades" and executive producing another popular series, "White Collar."

It was also reported that Fox confirmed that the focus for the new season will be on the relationship between Tom Mison's Revolutionary War-era Ichabod Crane, and Nicole Beharie's Abbie Mills.

In January, Fox executives explained how they think the show could benefit with a few tweaks. Co-chairman and network CEO Dana Walden was quoted as saying, "We're excited about bringing it back to something that feels a little bit more episodic in nature, that has closure, and doesn't feel quite so serialized. But we really love the show. We love Tom and Nicole. They have fantastic chemistry. We feel like it's a really unique series."

The company's president of entertainment, David Madden also proved his faith on the series, saying in a statement as noted by IGN, "Sleepy Hollow is truly inventive television. The talented producers - led by Alex [Kurtzman], Bob [Orci], Len [Wiseman] and Heather [Kadin] - along with the brilliant cast, anchored by Nicole [Beharie] and Tom [Mison], have created a fantastic world that brings 'history' to life with compelling and vibrant storytelling."

He added, "I had the pleasure of working with Clifton [Campbell] on both 'The Glades' and 'White Collar.' He is an excellent producer, and we can't wait to see what this team has in store for Season Three."

There is a lot of changes to be made in the upcoming season, with TV Line also noting that while seasons 1 and 2 or the sci-fi horror series were filmed in Atlanta, production for the third season will be moved to Wilmington, NC.

In January, Fox also renewed other shows, including "Gotham," "Empire," and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." "Sleepy Hollow" is lucky enough not to get cancelled, so do you think the third season, with its reported overhaul and plot focus on Ichabod and Abbie, will be better than the second?
