Before the release of "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens," Marvel has previously revealed a series of comic books to serve as prequel aimed to exploring the period between "Return of the Jedi" and this year's release.
The series, which comprises of 20 books will be released through different publishing companies and intended to fill in the missing years in the timeline between episodes six and seven. Inquisitr previously noted that among the publishers that Disney Worldwide Publishing and Lucasfilm Press are working on deals with include Dorling Kindersley (DK) and Marvel, which published the first comic books for the franchise in 1977.
New information came to light in a new report from Inquisitr, Marvel Comics announced the first entry to be called "Shattered Empire" and the cover art suggests that the comic will pick up right after where the original trilogy left off.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the books are targeted toward children and adults and loaded with foreshadowing about the new film with clues as to what happened with the main characters: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. The website also noted that like the "Star Wars: Rebels" animated series on Disney XD, the comic books will be considered as part of the official "Star Wars" canon.
IGN also reported that in addition to "Shattered Empire" Marvel is also planning another untitled series exploring the post-"Return of the Jedi" period from the point of view of C-3PO.
The cover art for "Shattered Empire" released by Marvel Entertainment via their official Twitter account is created by Phil Noto, although it gave no indication as to what will happen to the new canon, merely depicting the Ewok celebration from the conclusion of "Return of the Jedi."
Along with "Shattered Empire" several other books in the series have also been revealed, with "Star Wars: Aftermath" seemingly tying in the same events from the "Shattered Empire" cover, with the novel's description reading, "The second Death Star is destroyed. The Emperor and his powerful enforcer, Darth Vader, are rumored to be dead. The Galactic Empire is in chaos. Across the galaxy, some systems celebrate, while in others Imperial factions tighten their grip. Optimism and fear reign side by side. And while the Rebel Alliance engages the fractured forces of the Empire, a lone Rebel scout uncovers a secret Imperial meeting..."
"The Road to Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Shattered Empire #1" is set to be released on September 2015. Are you going to be scouring the comic book stores to learn what happens between Episodes 6 and 7 in the "Star Wars" series?
