For their upcoming fight on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have both agreed to undergo drug testing to be administered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).
In an interview with the LA Times, USADA chief executive Travis Tygart said that the agency will have full access "to conduct unannounced in- and out-of-competition blood and/or urine tests of the fighters at any point through fight night."
"It's a strong statement of the importance of clean and safe competition to have these two fighters voluntarily agree to have a WADA-level anti-doping program implemented for this fight. We commend them for their stand for clean sport and the message it sends to all those who want to compete clean at the highest levels of all sport," Tygart said, as quoted by LA Times.
He also explained that the two boxers agreed to what the World Anti-Doping Agency code states. A four-year ban from the competition will be slapped on any athlete who will test positive for performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).
It can be remembered in 2010, Mayweather's camp wanted Pacquiao to undergo random drug testing. The undefeated American fighter then accused Pacquiao of using PEDs during his fights.
Now, Top Rank CEO and Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said this drug testing should already "stop the rumors and bad speculation" about the Filipino boxing champ.
"We've agreed on the USADA testing, and we've agreed to their rules. I believe a lot of this that was spread around [about Pacquiao's reluctance to test] was unfortunate and nonsensical. There's not any issue with Manny or Floyd. They aren't taking performance-enhancing drugs," Arum was quoted by LA Times as saying.
The much-awaited megafight between Pacquiao and Mayweather is expected to be one of the richest fights in history with Mayweather saying that he can earn "nine figures for 36 minutes of work."
As the fight nears, a lot of prominent people in the sport have given their take on who will emerge as the bigger fighter inside the ring. Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson said that Pacquiao has the advantage in the fight because of "stylistic differences between both fighters," Bleacher Report noted.
"I thought from the start that Pacquiao is going to win. This guy is perpetual motion. He comes from every angle. He's all energy. Always throwing punches. Never stops. Floyd tucks in and picks his shots and he is more accurate. But he doesn't throw anything like Manny's hundred punches a round," Tyson said.
Boxing expert Teddy Atlas also agreed with Tyson. According to Fight Saga, he said, "Mayweather's greatest strength is also his weakness...his defense."
"So in spots where Mayweather is too defensive, there will be opportunities for Pacquiao, with his footwork, hand speed and his ability to put punches together, to steal rounds. In simple terms, Pacquiao can win the close rounds by out-hustling or outworking Mayweather," Atlas explained.
