Patrick Jane finally nabbed the nefarious Red John on the latest episode of "The Mentalist."
The episode begins with a man from the FBI (Rockmond Dunbar) speaking to Lisbon (Robin Tunney), Rigsby (Owain Yeoman), Cho (Tim Kang) and Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti). He says he will be questioning them individually for the next couple of days, and that they have the right to bring in an attorney.
It then cuts to a convenience store where news about the Red John case is blaring on the television. Two men enter, with one of them being Bertram (Michael Gaston). Bertram asks for a pay-phone to make a call. He calls Jane (Simon Baker), and is about to say something when an officer walks into the store and recognizes Bertram. He drops the phone, and the detective working with Bertram shoots the officer.
Meanwhile, the man from the FBI tells Lisbon that he suspects Jane has a connection to the Red John case. Lisbon goes to Jane and tells him that he's now a wanted man.
Jane calls Bertram, and Bertram tells him that he wants to meet in person, with no weapons. Jane doesn't believe he can trust Bertram, but Bertram says he could have killed him many times over by now. Jane agrees to meet him in a cemetery.
Lisbon gives Jane her gun as a prop, then Jane drives off as detectives chase after him. He ends up hitting a black van and is forced to stop. The FBI catch up to him, but Jane tells them he has to go take care of something important. Th rest of the CBI team comes to back up Jane, and as they are talking to the FBI, Jane is able to escape. The man from the FBI tells the officers to arrest Rigsby, Van Pelt and Cho.
Jane stops the car and gets out, knowing he's being followed. His car gets stolen, so he ends up hitching a ride to the cemetery.
The detective who is working with Bertram meets Jane and strips him of his weapon. Bertram confronts Jane and tells him that he's not Red John, and he has no idea who Red John is. Bertram then tells the detective to shoot Jane. Instead, the detective shoots Bertram. The sheriff appears from behind and tells the detective to leave.
It turns out Red John wasn't Bertram--it was the sheriff. The sheriff tells Jane that he created the secret organization, and has a great deal of power in the palm of his hands. Jane then hands breadcrumbs to the sheriff, prompting a pigeon to violently attack the sheriff's face. Jane then takes a handgun from under one of the benches in the church and shoots him in the leg.
A woman then walks into the church, so Jane tells her that he's with the police and that she needs to leave. The woman then goes up to Jane and tries to slit his throat, but Patrick is able to evade the knife. He then grabs his handgun and chases after Red John.
The FBI make it to the cemetery and see Bertram shot dead. Meanwhile, Jane is hot on Red John's trail. He's about to call the police, but Jane hangs up the phone and gets Red John in a chokehold. Jane then continues to strangle Red John until he eventually succumbs to death.
He calls Lisbon and leaves her a message telling her that he's done it--he finally killed Red John. He then tells her that he'll miss her, and begins to run.
When "The Mentalist" returns, it will jump ahead two years after the death of Red John.
A future episode will also feature the departure of Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman. Righetti commented on the impending exits to TVLine.
She says the reason for their departure is a well-kept secret. "I think it was sort of an unexpected turn for the writers too, to have the show kind of be reworked this season. So everybody's kind of trying to figure it out. And [they're] probably keeping it close to the vest so it comes as a surprise to everyone that is watching," she said.
Although she would not say how or why they exit, she said they will appear in the Dec. 1 episode.
"Basically, they have their own private security company," she revealed. "So we sort of are outsourced and freelanced with the FBI, and that's how we fit in."
It was also revealed that series newcomer Emily Swallow has been promoted to series regular ahead of her debut on Dec. 1.
She will play Kim Fischer, and will reportedly have a big impact on Jane's life.
TVLine also hints that the coded message Van Pelt found in Bertram's storage unit will come up again sometime soon.
On the next episode, "My Blue Heaven," "It's been two years since the Red John case was solved. Jane is a wanted man who's found peace in South America, where he's hiding out. Although he wants nothing more to do with crime solving, an unexpected job offer could change everything."
Watch the promo for "My Blue Heaven" below, which airs Sunday, Dec. 1 at 10 p.m. on CBS.
