"Glee's" Melissa Benoist has been cast as Supergirl and new posters have just been released with the actress in full costume for the CBS series of the same name.
The show, which follows Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El of Krypton, has arrived ages ago, keeping her powers to herself. However, when the young heroine turned 24, she started embracing her superhuman abilities to "become the hero she was destined to be."
According to Screen Rant, production for the pilot episode will soon be starting, thus releasing the first two posters of Beniost in her Supergirl costume. Designed by Oscar winner Colleen Atwood (who was also responsible for outfitting "Arrow" and "The Flash"), Supergirl's costume kept the classic cape and skirt, but with upgrades that gave it a nice edge.
Atwood said about the costume, "In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today."
The website noted that CBS showrunners have been playing it safe about Benoist's character, however the darker red and blue tones kept her closer to the "Man of Steel" while keeping the nostalgia of the original Supergirl from the comic books.
The Daily Mail also pointed out that Benoist's superhero sports a more modest look than that of her comic book counterpart. The original Supergirl sports a very short skirt and an exposed midriff, after all. The more modest style may not necessarily be a bad thing either, as Vanity Fair pointed out, Benoist looks more dignified as a female superhero, proving that not everyone will have to flash her - assets - in order to fight crime as a woman in this century.
Nina Tassler, CBS boss, said in a statement about the new show, "We're watching an evolution with regard to the way superhero characters are portrayed. There's a humanity, they're flawed, there's a relatability. I think for our network, what we responded to was her humanity...the other characters on the show as well. These are all things that made her imminently relatable and made the story exciting, made it an adventure."
Despite having "The Flash" and "Arrow" executive producer Greg Berlanti on board the series, "Supergirl" happens to be on a different network, which means that it's going to be a long way for crossovers to happen, although at some point Berlanti indicated that all three shows are in the same universe.
Along with Benoist, "Supergirl" will also star Calista Flockheart as Kara's boss, Mechad Brooks as Kara's love interest, and Laura Benanti as her birth mother.
