To "Toy Story" fans, what do you think will happen to Woody and Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the gang now that Andy is in college?
Most of the fans objected another movie considering that the initial trilogy already ended so well. However, Comic Book reported that Disney and Pixar are not planning on continuing the storyline with Andy. According to Pixar President Jim Morris, the upcoming installment will only have, at most, "tertiary ties" with the original trilogy.
This means that no, "Toy Story 4" is not exactly a continuation of Woody's and Buzz's adventures, but rather, it's as of now, considered a standalone story. Morris said, "It is not a continuation of the end of the story of Toy Story 3. The third movie was over in a beautiful way and completed a trilogy."
Slash Film also added that Morris hinted at how different the fourth installment will be. He said, "It is not a continuation of the end of the story of Toy Story 3. Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children. I think it will be a very good movie."
However, the details about the film are few and far between. Despite getting hints about the new plot line, it is still unclear which relationship they will be focused on for the movie. Will it be about Woody and Bo Peep, Buzz and Jessie, or even Mr. and Mrs. Potatohead?
According to The Huffington Post, John Lasseter, who directed the first two "Toy Story" films claimed that he was excited about the new direction that the franchise is taking, saying, "'Toy Story 3' ended Woody and Buzz's story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another 'Toy Story' movie. But when Andrew [Stanton], Pete [Docter], Lee [Unkrich] and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie -- and I wanted to direct it myself."
Los Angeles Times noted that Lasseter also added that he pulled in Rashida Jones and Will McCormack to help write the film. "They have such a great sense of character and originality, and I wanted to get a strong female voice in the writing of this."
Pixar has scheduled "Toy Story 4" for release on July 16, 2017.
