Floyd Mayweather Sr, the trainer and father of pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr, believed Manny Pacquiao's win over Brandon Rios is not enough for him to book a megafight showdown with his son.
Pacquiao is coming off a 12-round demolition of Rios in their WBO International Welterweight championship last week at Venetian Macao in Macau, China.
Surprisingly, the elder Mayweather, who has been one of Pacquiao's strongest critics, is impressed by the latest showing of the Filipino boxing icon inside the ring and even likened his win over a bigger but flat-footed Rios to his son's lopsided victories against Robert Guerrero and Saul Canelo Alvarez.
"This guy (Rios) never did really hit. He never really hit Manny with anything. Manny was slipping and sliding," Floyd Sr. said in an interview with Pro Boxing Insider. "Manny was looking like Floyd! Anny was looking like the way Floyd looked over (Saul) Alvarez and (Robert) Guerrero."
Not Enough For Floyd Fight
Despite Mayweather Sr's praises on Pacquiao's latest win, he believed the Filipino's win against Rios won't be enough to make him one of the frontrunners for a showdown with his son next year.
Mayweather Sr. thinks Pacquiao only looks good because Rios was not capable of solving Pacman's great advantage in speed and agility. He added that Pacquiao needs to beat at least one of Money's last two opponents, Robert Guerrero and Saul Canelo Alvarez, in a convincing fashion to arrange the megabout with Floyd Jr.
"I don't call that redeeming yourself. I don't believe beating someone like that would get you Floyd. Maybe he could do something like that to fight someone like [Canelo] Alvarez or [Robert] Guerrero. If he whoops one of them, then it's time to get it on. That's what he better do. If he wants to have any chance [of getting Floyd], he better whoop one of them," said Mayweather via Boxing Scene.
Boxing analysts predicted Mayweather vs. Pacquiao clash would shatter all kinds of records in boxing, and could generate as much as $300 million including revenues from Pay-Per-View buys and merchandise sales.
