Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd denied that he intentionally dropped a cup of soda on the sidelines in order to buy extra time in their 99-94 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.

With the Nets trailing by two points with only 8.3 seconds left to play in the match, Kidd was seen holding a cup of soda and video replays showed that the rookie coach said "hit me" to Taylor in order to delay the game -- either to draw up a play or ice free-throw shooter Jody Meeks, who was about to take his second shot.

Taylor then bumped Kidd near their bench, causing the cup of soda to spill on the playing court.

While the soda was being cleaned up, Nets assistant coach John Welch took advantage and drew up their final play, but the "tactic" did not produce good results as Paul Pierce missed the potential game-tying three-pointer with 2.2 seconds left in the game.

Kidd's slick move could be investigated by the NBA, according to ESPN, but Kidd quickly denied that it was a planned move, saying that the cup simply slipped out of his sweaty hand.

"Cup slipped out of my hand while I was getting Ty," Kidd said. "Sweaty palms. I was never good with the ball. In the heat of the battle, you're trying to get guys in and out of the game, and the cup fell out of my hand."

Taylor was also asked whether or not Kidd said "hit me" as shown in several video clips and the second-year point guard stood by his coach.

"No [Kidd didn't say that]. I wasn't paying attention. I just kind of bumped him. I didn't even know he was holding [anything]. [But] coach was drinking a soda on the sideline. I was like, 'What's he doing?' It could ice a free throw shooter and be a timeout when you don't have one, but that wasn't the thought process," Taylor said.
