"The Following" star Valerie Cruz has spilled some details about the upcoming season of FOX's hit show.
Cruz, who portrays the character of FBI agent Gina Mendez, revealed that the third season will start in the same way the previous season ended - with a bang.
"It's really amazing," the 38-year-old actress told Fox News Latino. "It has all the elements from last year, but so much more."
The third season of "The Following" premieres on Monday night, March 2, at 9 PM on FOX network, the news outlet noted. The last season saw Kevin Bacon's FBI agent Ryan Hardy finally having closure on his obsession with the serial killer Joe Caroll (James Purefoy).
"(This season) you learn more about these people, not just having it be the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys'. It's more balanced. I mean we catch the bad guys this year, but we are also more invested in all of the characters," Cruz continued, as quoted by Fox News Latino.
The actress also revealed to the news outlet that the writers and the producers of the show, which was created by Kevin Williamson, are exploring some changes for the upcoming season to make it even better, adding that they wouldn't want to be "complacent."
"(Season three) uses more imagination, more suspense, and it translates to what you feel while watching it on TV. You stay with bated breath, scene by scene," Cruz explained to Fox News Latino.
Executive producer Alexi Hawley also talked to E! News about bringing a "new era" to the new season. The upcoming episodes of the drama will see Hardy being haunted by his secrets, most particularly about his niece Max Hardy (Jessica Stroup) and his ex-partner Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore). Season 3 will touch on the characters' cover-up of Mike's execution of last season's villain Lily (Connie Nielsen).
"When we started out, we wanted to talk about what the next chapter in the show is and almost do a re-pilot," Hawley told E! News. "We launched the season in a way where new viewers could come into it and even if they haven't seen the show before, they can get up to speed very quickly and go on this new journey with us."
Hawley also said that the third season will have a connection with the previous seasons. The storyline of Hardy, Mike, and Max dealing with Lily's death will play out over the course of the first five episodes. After that, the show will take on a different direction, E! News noted.
"In order to catch some horrible people, the good guys actually did some horrible things," Hawley said, as reported by the news outlet. "It felt like seeing them deal with the repercussions of that was important, especially since there is friction among the three of them about it."
