Samsung's next flagship may release sooner than expected if a new report out of Korea is correct. According to new information, Samsung could be planning to release the rumored Galaxy S5 smartphone as early as March or April.
Korean news outlet ETNews claims that Samsung will begin mass production in January, around three months earlier than the company usually does with its Galaxy S releases. According to the report, Samsung will order 800,000 to 1 million units in January and around 6 million units in February.
When the handset does launch in March or April, it will apparently come in two versions: a premium model with metal casing and a flexible OLED screen, and a normal variant with plastic casing and a normal OLED display.
Samsung will also reportedly release a Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch alongside the Galaxy S5.
Samsung has not confirmed the report, and any information regarding the company's next-gen 2014 flagship smartphone should be taken with a healthy dose of salt given the early nature of development the device likely is in.
Samsung is no doubt gearing up for a strong fight in 2014, and much of the speculation driving such an early release is based off the less-than-stellar Galaxy S4 sales. While the numbers are still astronomical by most manufacturers' standards, Galaxy S4 sales in 2013 showed that the public was slowly losing interest in the brand, something that sent waves of panic through the Samsung camp. Samsung might look to get an earlier start in 2014 by pushing up the entire production cycle by three months.
Rumored specs for the Samsung Galaxy S5 handset include a 64-bit Exynos or Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 3GB RAM, a 4,000mAh battery, and a 16-megapixel camera. The device is expected to run the latest version of Android 4.4 KitKat at the time of launch, as well as a brand new version of Samsung's TouchWiz interface.
