When Cate Blanchett called Eddie Redmayne's name for Best Actor at the Oscars, the crowd roared in approval and gave him the standing ovation that his performance as physicist Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything" so deserves.
But it can't compare to his reaction - he admitted he couldn't quite articulate his thoughts properly.
However, Stephen Hawking himself was able to articulate his thoughts for Redmayne's award, when he took to Facebook his own excitement for the actor. The celebrated physicist, who only joined the social networking site a few months ago, shared a short but touching note for Redmayne, saying, "Congratulations to Eddie Redmayne for winning an #Oscar for playing me in The Theory of Everything Movie. Well done Eddie, I'm very proud of you. -SH"
In his acceptance speech, Redmayne said, "I'm fully aware that I am a lucky, lucky man. This Oscar belongs to all of those people around the world battling ALS."
The charming 33-year-old actor, according to Time Magazine, had been heavily favored for the award - after all, he won the same at the Screen Actors Guild and at the Golden Globes. The British actor always had a low public profile so his win was a refreshing moment at the awards show.
Redmayne, in a very emotionally charged moment, dedicated his Oscars to the Hawking family, as well as everyone who, like Hawking, suffered from ALS.
"The Theory of Everything" follows the life of a young Hawking and his struggle with the degenerative disease, albeit focusing heavily on his relationship with his first wife, Jane Wilde, played by Felicity Jones, who was nominated for Best Actress for her performance.
According to the Independent UK, Hawking has always been supportive of Redmayne's performance in the film, even saying that the actor's performance was so realistic, he mistook Redmayne for himself. The physicist also admitted to have shed a tear when he saw the film, saying, "I thought Eddie Redmayne portrayed me very well."
He also added about Redmayne's performance, "At times I thought he was me. I think Eddie's commitment will have a big emotional impact."
Unfortunately, the emotional impact did not give the Best Picture Award for "The Theory of Everything," that award went to "Birdman." However, it was enough for Redmayne to beat the rest of the competition, which included equally talented actors, Benedict Cumberbatch from "The Imitation Game", Bradley Cooper from "American Sniper," Steve Carell from "Foxcatcher", and Michael Keaton from "Birdman."
