Samsung's finally got its first device updated to the shiny new Android 4.4 KitKat, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system. The lucky recipients? Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play editions.

Google released the Android 4.4 KitKat kernel source codes for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play editions Monday, Nov. 25. The Galaxy S4 Google Play edition then started receiving its KitKat upgrade over the air Tuesday.

The rollout phase will take quite some time, especially if the recent Nexus device KitKat rollouts are any indication. Only a small percentage of Galaxy S4 Google Play editions will receive notifications for the download in the beginning, although that number should grow over the next few weeks as more batches are included.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition will join the HTC One Google Play edition, Google Nexus 4 and Google Nexus 5 as the only handsets on the market with an official Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade. This should come as no surprise, however, since Google Play edition smartphones run stock Android so that they can receive new firmwares straight from Google. In layman's terms: Samsung's TouchWiz interface is not present.

The upgrade brings all the normal, stock Android 4.4 KitKat goodies to the table, with the exception of the Google launcher, which seems to be a Google-exclusive feature for now.

Google is also planning on releasing a new upgrade to the Android camera API that should improve camera performance across the board.
