As eyebrows continue to raise on the possibility that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will still face off in May, an MGM Resorts executive hinted that it may push through on the scheduled date.
In a speech before analysts and investors on Tuesday, MGM Resorts International Chair Jim Murren said that the MGM Grand Las Vegas may just be the venue of the much-anticipated fight between the two boxers on May 2.
"We hope it's a big fight, and it's the big fight we're hoping for," Murren said in a Review Journal report adding that the event may just "break every record for (revenue)."
Mass Live added that this statement from Murren came with the announcement of the 2014 financial results and 2015 outlook for MGM Resorts International which is set to develop an $800-million Springfield project in Massachusetts.
If the fight will indeed be held at the MGM in Las Vegas, this can be considered as one of the "biggest-earning prizefight in history" said Mass Live because of the expected $1 billion revenue from pay-per-view subscription.
According to Fox Sports, Top Rank CEO and Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum has been surprisingly silent last Tuesday when asked about the status of the negotiations. It added that the promoter "declined to comment" during his appearance at the media day of Chinese fighter Zou Shiming at the gym of coach Freddie Roach in Hollywood.
"I know nothing," Arum was quoted by Fox Sports as saying. This silence was however taken by sports analysts and fans as an indication that final talks are already in place for the fight and add that to the MGM executive's earlier pronouncement.
These seemingly positive developments on the fight talks give the fans renewed hope that the fight will finally push through. Mayweather claimed two days earlier that both camps have not come to an agreement and that he and Pacquiao have not signed anything.
"I haven't signed yet and he hasn't signed yet. It's just been speculations and rumours. But I'm hopeful we can make the fight happen," Mayweather earlier told members of the media.
Talks of the fight started happening when Mayweather announced during an interview that he is ready to fight Pacquiao come May. He even chose the date and the venue of their much-awaited match.
Though fight talks have been notably slow for both camps, it made a major jump when the two boxers met and exchanged numbers during a recent NBA game which reportedly brought Mayweather to Pacquiao's hotel room where the two discussed their bout.
In the coming days, fans will be anticipating final details of the fight as talks about it have been long-dragging and they both have kept the people waiting and excited for its outcome.
