Toothless may be one of the cutest dragons in film, but that does not automatically mean that his franchise is a hit. In fact, despite being a good film, "How To Train Your Dragon 2" was a box office failure, and according to Slash Film, is the reason why the third installment is delayed until 2018.
However, the delay is working out just fine for writer Dean DeBlois as it gives him more time to get things right this time. Collider spoke to DeBlois about the next installment in the "Dragon" film and he divulged some details about the film plot and status.
DeBlois said that the third film will be about Hiccup at a time when he's coming of age. He explained, "Both he and Toothless are now chiefs of their respective tribes, and it's a dueling story where you have both characters trying to do what's right for their kind, and an eventual outcome where Hiccup is able to stand on his own."
At the end of the third movie, all the dragons will be gone, as they will be by the start of the original book series, and the how and why of it will be answered in the third movie, as it will be where the writers are planning to take the film. DeBlois said, "We're gonna take the story to where the books begin, which is Hiccup as an adult reflecting back on a time where there were dragons, suggesting that the dragons will in some way go away. Why and could they come back and the mystery of what all that is will be saved for the actual story."
According to Screen Rant, "How To Train Your Dragon 3" may even have a sort of "Toy Story" arc, as the culmination of Hiccup's coming of age story may be similar to "Toy Story 3" when Andy had to decide what to do with his beloved toys as he head out to college.
"How To Train Your Dragon," on the other hand, could follow a similar storyline by addressing how and why dragons begin to disappear. After all, the film will lead to the beginning of the book, and in the original text by Cressida Cowell, Hiccup starts by saying "There were dragons when I was a boy... You'll have to take my word for it."
DeBlois also once pointed out that the franchise will end in the third movie, and there won't be a fourth, therefore the disappearance of the magnificent creatures will have to be addressed, and we will have to see Toothless and his friends leave for good.
Rescheduled to be released on June 29, 2018, are you going to be ready in time to say goodbye to toothless and the rest of the dragons?
