No deal yet. This was how Floyd Mayweather Jr. described the talks for the megafight against Manny Pacquiao which is expected to happen in May.
Recent reports indicated that the deal will soon be sealed as the two camps have finally come to terms about the fight. Mayweather, however, said that those reports are just mere rumors.
"I haven't signed yet, and he hasn't signed yet, you know. It's just been speculations and rumors, but hopefully we can make the fight happen," the undefeated American fighter said, as quoted by the Washington Post.
According to ESPN, although he denied that the fight is already sealed, at least he expressed hope that it will still happen in the coming months.
Earlier, Top Rank CEO and Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said that HBO and Showtime have already agreed on how they will broadcast the fight. He claimed that the two camps are just ironing out final details. This statement was negated by Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza who said that they still have a long way to go in terms of the fight talks.
"The bottom line remains the same that it has been for the last couple of weeks - we are continuing to work hard to make a deal. We are continuing to make progress, but there are meaningful open issues. We can't celebrate getting two-thirds across a minefield. You celebrate when you completely cross and you are clear of danger. Right now we are still in the minefield," Espinoza told Boxing Scene.
These pronouncements are the exact opposite of what Pacquiao told Agence France-Presse (AFP) and other reporters.
"The negotiations are nearly finished. We agreed that this fight has to happen. We are ironing out the kinks. He (Mayweather) said he wants the fight to push through," said the eight-division boxing champ.
Pacman has repeatedly expressed his intention to face Mayweather in the ring, and now he has convinced the public that he wants the fight to happen more than ever.
"We agreed to their demand. In fact, I suggested a $5 million fine if I test positive for drugs," Pacquiao said, referring to Mayweather's demand of a blood test 30 days before the fight.
With two contradicting statements from the two camps, fans are already somehow confused with the way things are working out. There seems to be nothing concrete yet despite the tight timeline they have imposed.
Mayweather and Pacquiao are the two greatest boxers of their time and the match will ultimately determine which one is the better fighter.
