The Google Nexus 5 may be running the shiniest new version of Android, but that doesn't mean it can't still use a few tweaks. Google has confirmed that it's working on a new API for Android cameras that should deliver some impressive new results.

"Android's latest camera HAL (hardware abstraction layer) and framework supports raw and burst-mode photography," Google spokesperson Gina Scigliano said. "We will expose a developer API [application programming interface] in a future release to expose more of the HAL functionality."

Scigliano hinted that the upgrade should "be available shortly."

Google will be focusing on exposing two key areas of photography: raw image formats and burst mode. Google has reworked the Android camera's API in both areas, and plans on making the coding available to developers so that they can utilize the new improved coding. Keen eyes had previously spotted the coding, but Google has now confirmed its intentions to CNET.

"The core concept of the new HAL and future API is centered around burst-mode photography," Scigliano said. "The basic idea is instead of taking a single shot with a given set of parameters, you instead have the power to queue up a request to take multiple shots each with different parameter settings such as exposure gain. The camera subsystem captures a the burst of shots, which can be subsequently post-processed by the application layer."

Bear in mind, however, that this update will only affect software parameters. The Nexus 5's hardware will still remain unchanged, meaning it will still be limited by the physical constrictions it has always faced. Still, a better camera API means there should be improvements across the board, ones that will eventually trickle into other Android devices as well.
