If there's one device out in the market that has confused consumers, it's probably Microsoft's Surface Pro. There's something about its existence that's missing. A solid identity, perhaps?
In a recent ad for the Surface Pro 3, Microsoft throws one interesting question: "How do you reinvent the laptop?"
Apparently, one doesn't need to look further to get answers. How does Microsoft reinvent the laptop? Well, as seen in the ad, this can be done in a number of ways: pack one tablet with a detachable keyboard; provide enormous storage space; mount an adjustable kickstand; give the touchscreen a pen; run the full Office suite and voila -- the Surface Pro becomes "a reinvented laptop."
Certainly, the company appears to acknowledge the device as a laptop. But at the end of the ad, Microsoft drops another statement, "The tablet that can replace your laptop."
So, what is it, actually?
CNET affirmed that the Surface Pro isn't a bad product, but only that it "hasn't made the sort of emotional connection."
"It's been hard for Microsoft to establish the Surface in people's minds," the outlet said.
If classifying the current Surface Pros would take sleepless nights for some, we can only wonder how the next device -- the Surface Pro 4 -- establishes itself at launch. Will it be branded as a tablet, a laptop, something in between or something else?
At present, there has been rampant speculation on the Surface Pro 4. For one, WCCFtech reported that the device is expected to come with a similar resolution as its predecessor. In addition, it's pegged to have a 13- to 14-inch screen, an Intel Core M processor and Windows 10 support.
Design & Trend cited a report, which claimed that the Surface Pro 4 arrives in two different sizes. Apart from the purported two-digit forms, the outlet spoke of an 8-inch model as a Surface Pro Mini.
The device's release date remains naturally uncertain, unless Microsoft kills all the allegations. WinBeta cited a report which tells it's "soon." On the other hand, Design & Trend is convinced that October 2015 would be likely, if the company sticks to its release pattern. Until then, we'll wait and see what the Surface Pro 4 becomes -- and delivers.
On the brighter side, the Surface Pro's lack of classification may have actually made it one of today's most unique devices. In fact, it's a definite step to the booming industry of hybrid electronic companions. Microsoft seems to prove that even in the world of gadgets, labels are not as important -- abilities far determine one's worth more than anything else.
