Manny Pacquiao will knock out Floyd Mayweather Jr. cold, should the mega fight between two of the biggest names in boxing finally happens next year, a veteran boxing analyst said on Wednesday.
Ed Sarmienta, who has been a boxing pundit for three decades in the Philippines, believed the much-awaited showdown between Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. is inevitable and will happen next year, and thinks the Saranggani Congressman has a great shot at knocking out Mayweather for the first time in his career.
"I think he will beat Mayweather in a solid knockout. Mayweather is just scared of fighting Manny because he doesn't want to risk his unblemished record," said Sarmienta in an interview with GMA News.
Fight of the Century
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum stressed that he's willing to repair his relationship with Mayweather's camp and Golden Boy Promotions just to arrange the bout between the two pound-for-pound champions.
"On our side the answer is yes [the fight can be made in 2014], we're very open to it," Arum told Daily Mail. "There are ways it can get done, they have to dumb down the rhetoric, we are prepared to dumb down the rhetoric and get it done.
"There is no real impediment to having that fight happen whether it will or not depends completely on the Mayweather side. I can see it happening but I can't predict that it will happen because it takes two to tango."
According to Arum, the "Fight of the Century" will break all kinds of records in boxing, and could generate as much as $300 million, including Pay-Per-View revenue buys and merchandise sales.
One possible stumbling block for the fight to happen is the ongoing feud between Pay-Per-View giants HBO and Showtime. Mayweather signed a lucrative six-fight deal with Showtime Boxing earlier this year while Pacquiao is HBO's top draw.
However, Arum said both companies could work things out like they did when they arranged the clash between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson.
"You've got to go back in history when Lennox Lewis, who fought for HBO, fought against Mike Tyson who was a Showtime fighter. Both networks participated in the promotion so that's a road map of how we get this thing done," Arum added.
Mayweather, who demolished Saul Canelo Alvarez in 12 rounds in September, is still waiting for his next opponent for his May fight, while Pacquiao is coming off a 12-round demolition of Brandon Rios last week at Venetian Macao in Macau China.
