It seems that Spider-Man is going to undergo another makeover as he returns to the Marvel Universe. For the last five films since 2002, the friendly neighborhood superhero has been under the banner of Sony Pictures Entertainment, which owned the film rights to the character.

However, Sony finally went hand in hand with Marvel in a new deal for the superhero. According to Rolling Stone, Sony will still retain financial and creative control over the superhero, and will still be distributing the franchise, however, working with Marvel will allow Spidey to join the ever-expanding universe of the Marvel superhero franchise.

Disney Chairman and CEO, Bob Iger, said, "Spider-Man is one of Marvel's great characters, beloved around the world. We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building."

Marvel reported on its official website that the new deal will have Spider-Man appear in a Marvel Film and then Sony will be releasing the next installment on July 28, 2017 in a production by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal, as well as their expert team, which oversaw the web slinger's launch since 2002.

Fans are over the moon over the Sony-Marvel deal. According to USA Today, fans are ecstatic about the possibility of Spider-Man joining Iron Man and Captain America and the others in "The Avengers." The website noted that the web slinger would probably be appearing in other Avengers films before his Marvel Cinematic Universe film in 2017, most likely appearing in "Captain America: Civil War" which is set to be released on May 6, 2016.

He may also be appearing in other Avengers-related films including a "Thor" film, possibly with "Guardians of the Galaxy," and ultimately, in "Avengers: Infinity War" in 2019.

Unlike Marvel's characters, however, there have already been five Spider-Man films with two different actors while the character was under Sony. Tobey Maguire starred in "Spider-Man" 1, 2, and 3. Andrew Garfield also appeared in the more recent "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." This time, as Sony works together with Marvel, it is unlikely that Garfield will still be appearing for a third "The Amazing Spider-Man" story.

Variety noted that the deal will bring significant benefits to both Sony and Marvel. Sony can generate more exposure to the hero and generate more enthusiasm from fans who wanted Spidey to be part of the Avengers for so long (as he should be). Marvel, on the other hand, can now have access to one of the most beloved superheroes of all time, and can launch franchises that could impact the Marvel film timeline until 2020.

What do you think about the Sony-Marvel deal for Spidey?
