Yaya DaCosta will be the lead star of a "Chicago Fire" spinoff.
According to a report from Deadline, the 32-year-old actress is set to headline "Chicago Med," the proposed medical TV drama spinoff from NBC's "Chicago Fire."
"DaCosta will play Maggie Seaver (formerly Emily Sexton), an attractive nurse who begins to date Chicago Fire's Kelly (Taylor Kinney), with whom she has a history dating back to high school," Deadline described.
DaCosta and the other cast members of the spinoff will be introduced in the nineteenth episode of "Chicago Fire" this season. The episode will be written by "Chicago Fire" creators/executive producers Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, the news outlet noted. Matt Olmstead and Dick Wolf will executive produce the companion series.
NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said in January that "Chicago Med" is "something that we're just seeding into the system, seeing if there's a show there that could eventually spin off into itself," he was quoted as saying in another report by Deadline. Executive producer Wolf added that "Chicago Med" will be an "integrated episode of 'Chicago Fire,'" and that "there will be an event" that brings the spinoff series in the original show.
DaCosta first came to the public's attention when she portrayed pop icon Whitney Houston in Lifetime's biopic, Daily Mail explained. She also starred in Lee Daniels' 2013 movie offering titled "The Butler." Her upcoming films, "Bolden!" and "The Nice Guys," are set to premiere in 2016.
Another spinoff series has already been made based on "Chicago Fire." Emmy Award-winning Wolf also produced "Chicago P.D." in 2014, a police procedural TV drama which also airs at NBC, Cinema Blend reported. Despite not rating high enough as "Chicago Fire," the TV network still decided to renew the show for a third season, the outlet added.
Whitney Houston's Lifetime Biopic
Lifetime's TV movie about Houston's life, specifically on her marriage with Bobby Brown, will air on the UK's Lifetime channel on Thursday, February 12, at 9 PM, Digital Spy reported. Aside from DaCosta, the biopic also stars Arlen Escarpeta as Brown.
But the late iconic singer's family was not pleased with the outcome of the TV movie. Houston's sister-in-law Pat Houston said, "I say this to all Whitney's family, friends and fan base: If you watch this movie, watch it knowing that Lifetime is notorious for making bad biopics of deceased celebrities and brace yourself for the worst," the news outlet quoted.
She added, "You should not be surprised that someone decided to do a made for TV biopic. And, I might add, without the family's blessing and despite her mother's request to not do this movie."
