AMC's biggest series, "The Walking Dead," came back with great ratings on Sunday night. However, the biggest premiere turned out to be the show after. "Breaking Bad" spin-off, "Better Call Saul" opened with the best ever cable premiere in history for viewers under the age of 50. According to Vulture, the show gathered 4.4 million viewers under the age of 50, while the previous record holder, HBO's "Deadwood," opened to only 3.7 million.
Despite massive audience reach, Vulture reported that it still did not break the viewers of all ages category, though, considering that the previous record holders for the category were TNT's "Rizzoli and Isles" and "The Closer" which opened to over 7 million audiences in 2010 and 2005. "Better Call Saul" came up just shy of that with a healthy 6.9 million.
According to Variety, Neilsen noted that "The Walking Dead" averaged at an 8.0 rating for adults aged 18-49 with 15.6 million views overall. However, "Better Call Saul" wiped TWD as the best opening with 6.9 million viewers. The previous record as highest cable premiere was "The Dead Zone" in 2002, with 4 million viewers.
But the biggest surprise about the two-day premiere for "Better Call Saul" is the fact that someone from "Breaking Bad" actually made an appearance, although it's not someone that fans would be thrilled to see.
In the episode "Mijo," Tuco made an appearance, and he still has a warm, fuzzy side: a funnyman who cares about his Abuela. Although there is a warmer and fuzzy side to the bat-crap crazy character that "Breaking Bad" fans know from the original series, the truth to the matter is that Tuco really is mostly bat-crap crazy, even before Walter White and Jesse Pinkman happened.
E! Online noted that "Better Call Saul" could really have made TV History with its sky-high TV ratings, and as it turned out, readers who weighed in on the prequel to "Breaking Bad" gave it great reviews: with 93.5 voting that they loved it.
AMC president Charlie Collier was particularly impressed at the ratings that the network has raked in. He said in a statement, "In a competitive environment that sometimes gets as much press as the shows themselves, it is gratifying to deliver programming that breaks through and reaches passionate audiences. For AMC, it starts with the creative talent we are so fortunate to be working with including, among many others - in the order of last night's unforgettable schedule - Robert Kirkman and Scott Gimple of 'The Walking Dead,' Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould of 'Better Call Saul,' and Chris Hardwick of 'Talking Dead'."
He continued, "We are supremely thankful for the talented people who call this network home, and for the fans who continue to make AMC a television destination unlike any other. Walking. Calling. Talking. Humbling."
