The Xbox One has suffered somewhat since launch, with some users reporting the disc drive for their console is not working, or that the drive makes a grinding noise when loading a game. However, Microsoft is intent to fix the problems. The company is now offering affected users a free replacement console for those dealing with faulty machines, and has also announced that it will be offering some users a free first-party game as an apology for the mishap.
Microsoft sent an official statement to IGN explaining the motivation behind offering a digital copy of a game along with a replacement console for the users affected by this hardware error:
"While a replacement console is on its way, we want to ensure our advance exchange customers can stay in the game. We will provide each of them with a free digital download of one of the launch titles published by Microsoft Studios."
The free games offered by Microsoft are Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome and Zoo Tycoon. These games are all fairly solid choices, with Dead Rising 3 and Forza Motorsport 5 some of the best console-exclusive games available for either the Xbox One or PlayStation 4.
In addition, Microsoft is offering a digital download of these games, which means that while users wait for their replacement consoles, they can download their free game and being playing. Then when the new console arrives players can redownload the game on the new console and start off right where they left off. However, users might not have long to wait for their new consoles. Microsoft is sending out replacement Xbox One consoles before users send their broken consoles back to Microsoft. This is an unprecedented move by Microsoft, and it shows that the company is working hard to correct this problem as quickly as possible and wipe this blemish off of the new console's reputation.
The Xbox One was launched on Nov. 22, and the console has already managed to sell 1 million copies after being released in 13 different countries. The console has a strong launch lineup, which has helped propel the console to new heights and position it as a holiday favorite. However, Microsoft has warned those who want to buy the console that stock will be limited after launch, so there may not be enough copies of the console to go around during this holiday shopping season.
