NBC just released its series renewals for the year, but it seems that there's a glaring question mark next to "Constantine." The series, which is based on the characters from DC Comics "Hellblazer", stars Matt Ryan as the titular character, John Constantine, a demon hunter who also happens to be dabbling in the occult.
According to ComicBook.com, it's not yet the end of DC's mage, as it is most likely that the announced renewals were for their strongest dramas of the year - "The Black List", "Grimm" and "Law and Order" among them. However, "Constantine," despite its strong plot, is still considered a wildcard series. It will be smarter for NBC to wait until the series concludes this February to announce its future.
The show is still on fragile ground, and here are some theories on why it probably won't be renewed after all:
1) The show may have stuck to the original material, but it seems that only fans are looking forward to new episodes every week. According to Franchise Herald, it suffered underwhelming response from the audience. While their first two episodes of the year seemed to have seen a rise in ratings, the episodes could be considered a fluke - ratings suffered again on its third episode of the year, which aired in January 30, the report added.
2) NBC announced that it's not ordering more episodes past the original 13. Sure, there are some shows that only have 13 episodes per season, so there may be hope yet. Unfortunately, with its fellow DC-inspired shows in other networks ("Gotham", "Flash", "Arrow") getting high ratings and rolling in full 22-episode seasons, things are looking a bit bleak for "Constantine."
However, fans should not despair yet. Earlier this year, NBC heads, Bob Greenblatt and Jennifer Salke expressed their disappointment about the ratings, but they did not explicitly say that they're definitely cancelling it. Salke told IGN, "We wish the show had done better live. It has a big viewership after [it airs] in all kinds of ways and it has a younger audience, but the live number is challenging. It hasn't come out in the way we wanted it to, but we love the show. I think it's fair to say we're still talking about it."
Greenblatt also added, "We got on the bandwagon of these shows based on comic books and maybe there are too many of them. It's a popular series of comics, but it's not 'The Flash,' it's not Batman. So maybe it suffers a little bit there. But as Jen said, it's a show we really like. We love Matt Ryan, who's the star of it. I think we did right by the fans who didn't like the film that was made of it. The future is still up in the air for that show."
Do you think talks in NBC regarding "Constantine" will end in a renewal or in a cancellation?
