Kobe Bryant has yet to play a game this season, but the future of the superstar guard is already set in stone as he agreed to a two-year contract extension Monday with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Bryant, who is targeting a return from an Achilles injury this month, signed a two-year deal worth $48.5 million, according to ESPN Los Angeles.

By agreeing to such financial term, Bryant will keep his status as the highest-paid player in the league as he is set to receive $23.5 million in the first year of the extension and $25 million in the second year.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak announced the deal, saying that the contract extension will ensure that Bryant will finish his career with the Lakers.

"We've said all along that our priority and hope was to have Kobe finish his career as a Laker, and this should ensure that that happens," Kupchak said. "To play 20 years in the NBA, and to do so with the same team, is unprecedented, and quite an accomplishment. Most importantly, however, it assures us that one of the best players in the world will remain a Laker, bringing us excellent play and excitement for years to come."

Bryant, who also announced the development on his Twitter account, said that he can now focus on getting back to full strength. The 35-year-old superstar, a five-time NBA champion, is still optimistic that he can win his sixth title before ending his storied career.

"It's always a much greater appreciation for it. You understand the mortality that comes with being on that doorstep. There's always a sense of enjoyment when you come back," Bryant said.

The contract extension signed by Bryant would not affect the financial flexibility of the Lakers in the next few seasons. The Lakers are still in position to sign a superstar from next offseason's free agent market, which could include New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony and Miami Heat star LeBron James.
