The Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly made their first move in acquiring slugger Matt Kemp in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a source close to situation reported during the weekend.

The Jays reportedly had a talk with the Dodgers' front office regarding the possibility of acquiring Kemp in exchange for several assets during the General Manager's meeting.

Sources indicated the negotiation between the Jays and Dodgers didn't gain traction, but chances are high that the trade discussion could be revisited anytime this offseason.

Jays management on trade rumors

General Manager Alex Anthopoulos said that nothing is imminent concerning trades at present, but the young front office executive stressed that the Jays will continue to monitor the trading floor with the hope of getting another All-Star slugger or hurler this winter.

"I won't comment on specific rumors or things like that but I will say that we are definitely exploring offers with teams but also just like a lot of other stuff that's out there that is false, we have not made an offer to anybody with respect to a starter," Anthopoulos said in an interview on ESPN Sirius XM.

Last winter, the Jays loaded up their lineup with big bats and hurlers by acquiring Jose Reyes, Melky Cabrera and R.A Dickey via trade and free agency signing. This winter, the Jays made it a point of infusing additional talents to make the team more competitive next season and beyond.

Red Sox Wants Kemp Too

The Blue Jays certainly have competition in their bid to land Kemp, one of which is the defending World Series Champion Boston Red Sox.

According to sources, the Red Sox have already made an inquiry about the availability of Kemp via trade. After unloading some of baseball's biggest contracts via trade with the Dodgers two seasons ago, Boston is reportedly willing to absorb the remainder of Kemp $130 million deal over six years.

The 29-year-old Kemp batted .270 with six homers and 33 RBIs in another injury marred season. Kemp has played only 179 games over the last two seasons, but he proved to be durable and productive prior to that. The Dodger slugger's best season came in 2011, when he hit .324 with 39 homers to place a close second behind eventual NL MVP Ryan Braun.
