"The Big Bang Theory" star Jim Parsons is returning to Broadway in a comedy called "An Act of God." According to The New York Times, the production is to be directed by Joe Mantello whose directing credits on Broadway include "The Last Ship," and the one-woman show with Bette Midler called "I'll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers."

However, despite getting back on stage, Parsons is not going to be in the race for the Tony Awards as it will open after the 2014-15 eligibility cutoff on April 23, but will make him eligible for a nomination for the 2015-16 season instead.

According to Variety, "An Act of God" is based on David Javerbaum's book, "The Last Testament: A Memoir by God."

The comedy musical promises to provide the answers to the mysteries of the Bible, and of existence in general. The rest of the cast - two angels - is yet to be announced, as does the design team.

Javerbaum's list of accomplishments also included an Emmy for his work as head writer and executive producer of "The Daily Show." He also did the the stage adaptation of his book, as well as the co-writer to the "Cry-Baby" score from 2008. He has even written songs for Neil Patrick Harris in one of his spiels when the actor hosted the Tony Awards.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the announcement of Parson's casting was made in a humorous way as if it has been said by God himself via his agent, saying, "I chose Jim to play Me because I relish the irony of telling the real story of the Six Days of Creation through the star of The Big Bang Theory. Plus, he's funny. The theater was also chosen for ironic reasons, as Studio 54 - up to this point - has been the single most God-less place in the universe. And as for our director, Joe Mantello, that was not ironic. I've been a fan of his since 'Wicked'!"

The production is set to start showing previews on May 5 at Studio 54, and will officially open on May 28.

Jim Parsons was last seen on Broadway in 2012 as Elwood P. Dowd in a revival of the musical, "Harvey," which was a hit in the box office, as well as with the critics.

Outside Broadway, Parsons is currently starring in the eighth season of CBS hit comedy series as Sheldon Cooper, in "The Big Bang Theory" acting alongside Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, and Kunal Nayyar.

Do you think Parsons will be as good on stage as he is on the small screen?
