"Jane the Virgin" has cast "West Side Story" actress Rita Moreno to play Rogelio De La Vega's mother.
TV Line broke the news and with this new development, this means Moreno's character will be the grandmother of Gina Rodriguez's Jane Villanueva, given that the latter is the estranged daughter of the telenovela star Rogelio.
Moreno's role, who is also called "Glam-ma," in the CW series is "fiercely protective of her wildly successful son," according to TV Line. She will appear in the eighteenth episode of the series.
Jaime Camil, who portrays Rogelio, expressed his excitement over having the legendary actress in the show. In a statement posted on his official Facebook account, he said, "She has an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy & Tony, also an immense talent and beautiful heart. What an honor to be sharing #JaneTheVirgin with the unmatched #RitaMoreno."
Moreno appeared on TV shows such as "Happily Divorced," "Oz," and "The Electric Company." She is also one of the elite performers who won an EGOT (an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony), TV Line noted.
'A Bunch of Fresh Drama' Ahead for 'Jane the Virgin'
Speaking at the CBS Television Studios' Studio Day a few weeks ago, series creator, Jennie Snyder Urman, discussed what's in store for "Jane the Virgin." According to Urman, there will be "no shortage of interesting narratives to explore" once the titular character gives birth, Entertainment Weekly reported.
"All of this stuff and planning and the pregnancy, there's another earthquake coming when the kid comes," she said, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly. "I'm looking forward to telling those stories. To me, that's going to give us a whole bunch of fresh drama. I think moms can be interesting. I think they can be heartbroken. I think they can be passionate. I think it's going to add a layer, and there's some funny baby stuff."
Urman added that having a baby doesn't mean he/she has to be by your side all the time, the news outlet added further. A love triangle could also erupt between Jane, Michael (Brett Dier), and Rafael (Justin Baldoni). These possible storylines could push the narrative of the show onwards. Urman also revealed that they still have "plenty of ideas" in the writer's room.
"We're still excited by all the twists and turns," she said, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. "I think as long as you write really specific characters who have really specific things that they want, you're going to find stories. As long as they have conflict with people who want opposite things. Whether someone cheats and doesn't know or someone cheats and finds out, there's ramifications to both. So far, we have enough story."
"Jane the Virgin" airs every Monday, 9 PM, on The CW.
