Top Rank CEO Bob Arum announced that Manny Pacquiao, who scored a masterful win against Brandon Rios on Saturday, will return to the ring in April.
Arum said that he will sit down with Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach to discuss the details of the Filipino's next fight, which is tentatively scheduled on April 12 in the United States -- most likely in Las Vegas.
"We'll sit down and we'll figure it out. If you figure something out in light of a big victory, you usually make the wrong decision. We'll talk to Manny, we'll talk to Freddie but I know that we are tentatively scheduled for April 12, hopefully in the United States," Arum said in an interview as reported by Boxingscene.
Floyd Mayweather Jr is definitely on top of the list of possible opponents, but Roach admitted that it is highly unlikely considering the differences between the fighters' camps.
In a separate interview with Edward Chaykovsky, Roach said that Pacquiao still has the tools to give Mayweather a run for his money. Roach admitted that Pacquiao is not as deadly as he was several years ago, but he pointed out that Mayweather also slowed down.
"Manny slowed down but Floyd slowed down too, and that's a bigger factor for him because of his defensive stance. I'm not saying it will be an easy fight for us, of course we need a great game plan for someone like Floyd. But if you're asking me, I'll still pick Manny over Floyd," Roach said.
Roach also expressed his doubts regarding a possible rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez, who previously said that he is not interested in a fifth showdown with Pacquiao. If Marquez stays firm on his previous stance, Pacquiao will likely settle for a rematch with Timothy Bradley.
"Personally, I want Marquez but the thing is I can't be sure if we can get him to fight us. Bradley is there. Obviously Mayweather is a guy we want," Roach said.
WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov is also reportedly being considered as Pacquiao's next foe, but the Russian champion is also trained by Roach and the two fighters are good friends.
