The coronation of Miss Colombia Paulina Vega as Miss Universe 2014 has gathered a lot of controversy, most notably from the supporters of Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell. As the beauty pageant took place at Doral, Florida on January 25, it's no secret that Fennell gained a lot of fans and quickly became one of the favorites in the competition
Latin Times noted that this could be because of the Jamaican beauty's poise, good looks, and gracefulness. Furthermore, her answers in the Q&A portion of the pageant were "the most consistent ones."
Fennell's loss prompted outrageous remarks not only from the audience in the live event but also from numerous TV viewers. She only made it to fifth place, which was quite unexpected as she was a strong contender to win in the pageant. It's no wonder that Vega's victory in the pageant obtained negative reactions. Latin Times reported that the reason behind this is Vega's alleged unlikeable personality, which didn't bode well with the other contestants.
According to the news outlet, "Rumors say Vega was rude and believed herself to be superior to the others." When former Miss Universe winner Gabriela Isler crowned the 22-year-old beauty from Barranquilla, Colombia, the other competitors rushed over to Fennell, lifting her up in their arms "as if they were saying that she was the true winner of the pageant." A resounding boo was also heard from the audience when Fennell's name was called first. They were expecting her to place higher.
Reports are claiming that one of the reasons why Fennell didn't win the competition is because of her short and pixie cut hairdo, which is quite similar to Hollywood actress' Halle Berry's hair style.
Daily Mail reported that Fennell's grandfather, Michael Fennell, aired out his disappointment over the pageant judges for "being unclear about the requirements needed to win the show." He said that his granddaughter lost due to "unwritten factors."
"If short hair is a problem why didn't they say so in the contest? In my mind she was absolutely beautiful in her short hair. She was different but if the judges didn't want short hair then say so," he said, as quoted by Daily Mail. "I wish I knew how these contests were judged where there are other factors that are unwritten that have to be considered."
According to Daily Mail, fans of Fennell claim that she was robbed of the title "after she proudly called Usain Bolt, the world's fastest short-distance runner, and reggae-king Bob Marley her country's greatest contributions to the world." Fans say that Fennell's non-traditional answers, "her pixie cut, and Caribbean confidence" added to her not placing higher in the runner-ups.
"I don't have long tresses like everyone else, I'm just representing myself and that's what beauty pageants are all about," said Fennell in the Q&A portion of Miss Universe, as quoted by the news outlet. "You don't have to look a certain way ... and I feel like I represent that."
