Not everyone is happy about the recently released "Fantastic Four" trailer, with a few people saying that it's too dark for the light and fun superhero film that it's supposed to be, based on the previous ones that were released.
According to CNN, 20th Century Fox's take on the film is different than what moviegoers are used to, with some of the lead cast members looking to be younger than the cast in the original movies, but most specifically, Michael B. Jordan, an African-American actor, is playing the Human Torch.
The negative reviews of the trailer, however, comes from non-comic book-reading fans, as Vox noted, it's a bit confusing for them. There is a perfectly good explanation as to why "The Fantastic Four" is the way it is in this particular movie, and to put it simply, it's in a different universe.
According to the website, the film is set in space because the comic book it was based on was set in space. In 1961, when Marvel was struggling, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were commissioned to create stories that could compete with DC's Justice League, and they ended up with the concept for "Fantastic Four." This was during the time when the US and the Soviets were locked in a space race, so Marvel's creators sent the characters to space as well, making them more sci-fi than the Justice League were.
But, as it is with comic book characters, the team went through a revamp in Marvel's Ultimate Universe, and it is vastly different from the canon storyline, despite the similarities.
That is where the cast of the new "Fantastic Four" film comes in: the Ultimate Universe's characters are younger than their main universe counterparts, allowing for diversity, and allowing the film's director, Josh Trank to add small touches to the characters.
One of his personal touches included casting a black actor as The Human Torch, which caused some complaints from fans, considering that he's white in the comics.
But as Jordan said in a press event last year, as noted by The Wrap: "You can't make everybody happy. You just gotta accept that and know. I'm an actor, I have to do my job. I'm going to do my job the best I can and the way I've been doing it my entire life, my entire career."
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think: is it okay for the Human Torch to be black, or would you prefer him to be white like in the comics?
