Josh Segarra recently opened up to Fox News Latino to discuss his "Sirens" character, Bill Cepeda. The USA Network comedy series, which revolves around the lives of three Chicago paramedics, features Segarra as a simple-minded police officer. Here's what the 28-year-old actor has to say about his role, as reported by the news outlet.
The Puerto Rican star describes his character as the "class clown" and the one who gets to say all the funny lines and "pretty much anything."
"I love playing the character," Segarra told Fox News Latino. "He's been described to me as an airhead... I see him - he's curious. He's heartfelt. He wants to know more."
The actor also revealed that his mother doesn't completely get the part, but Segarra pacifies his mother's hesitations by telling her that "it takes a genius to be this dumb."
"My momma, she doesn't like it - well, she likes it, but she's my mom. She can't separate me from Billy. She sees her baby, she sees Joshuita," Segarra said. "She's always like 'Ay papi, you have to sound smarter on the TV because you sound stupid and then my friends at work, they are making fun of you, saying 'your son is stupid,' but I know you're not.'"
Segarra also said that "Sirens" aims to make viewers "giggle" and "laugh," unlike other TV shows which often have underlying messages they want to get across the public. The actor revealed that the writers of "Sirens" always try to integrate his Latino background into his character, which included growing up with a Latina mom and having been raised in a Pentecostal church.
"I'm always very flattered when they incorporate things that I've told them about my life. They love it. They think it's hilarious," the actor said.
"Sirens" premiered its second season on Tuesday, January 27. Aside from Segarra, the half-hour show executively produced by Denis Leary also stars Michael Mosley, Kevin Daniels, and Kevin Bigle, according to TV Line.
Segarra also reflected upon the issues of racial diversity which is very common in the entertainment industry. The actor had high praises on Latina actress Gina Rodriguez, who recently won a Golden Globe award for her performance as the lead character on the new comedy series "Jane the Virgin."
"Watching her and hearing her speak about everybody - that's one step in the right direction," he told Fox News Latino. "It's never going to be ideal for everybody... Personally, I'm pumped that I get to be a Latino on TV. I'm pumped that people get to see Billy as a cop, who's funny and kind and warm," he added.
"It's fun to watch that. I'm honored to be one little dot on the flag that we're making. I'm stoked to be a part of it," Segarra concluded, as reported by the news outlet.
