In mid-2014, an alleged Xbox One box art bearing the "Call of Duty: World at War 2" title has surfaced online, much to the delight of anticipating fans. According to Gamnesia, Treyarch was supposedly in-charge of developing the new "Call of Duty" title, set for release this year.
Sure enough, the box art was pretty convincing, appearing to have the familiar CoD logo and a breath-taking atmosphere in the background. The leak immediately catapulted speculations aimed at the much-awaited World War sequel.
But as it turned out, Cinema Blend noted that the image was nothing but hoax. The outlet cited one Reddit user, who revealed that the template was stolen from the portfolio of a French graphic artist named Seb Janiak. While the excitement has been killed at once, it is known for a fact that Treyarch's contribution is next in line. This made the leaked box art easier to believe.
Last month, Treyarch updated its official Facebook page with an info tribute on the Pearl Harbor attack. The post took Franklin D. Roosevelt's words, "December 7, 1941...a date which will live in infamy." Apparently, fans have linked the post to the developer's next CoD game.
"Waw [World at War] 2 please," a commenter wrote.
Another responded, "The 'World at War' and 'Black Ops' series are by far THE BEST of the whole COD franchise... It would be GREAT if a WAW2 came."
The thread went on but it's immediately noticeable how fans wanted "Call of Duty: World at War 2." Surprisingly, the title was already conceived long ago before this moment -- more than five years, to be exact.
In October 2009, Video Games Blogger cited an issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine, which placed "Call of Duty: World at War 2" under the title "The Secret Games of 2010."
The outlet quoted the reading, "Insider slips reveal three big names you can already pencil for the next year. 'Killzone 3' is reportedly deep in development, Insomniac's 'Full Moon Show' podcast hints at a project we can only conclude is 'Resistance 3,' and a Treyarch employee's online mentions a 'Call of Duty: World at War' sequel."
Considering the magazine excerpt and the current timeline, it is unclear whether Treyarch actually attempted to bring "World at War 2" in 2010, or only planned to begin its development. At present, no official word from the developer has satisfied eager CoD fans.
Whatever Treyarch decides to pursue, NuzCo.com is convinced that a great game will be coming. The source, however, indicated that the 2015 CoD game may not be titled "World at War 2" after all.
