Some reports are claiming that the sequel for the Brad Pitt-starrer, "World War Z", would surprise moviegoers when it hits theaters in 2016.
Steve Knight, the screenplay writer for the follow-up of the zombie action film, has revealed that "World War Z 2" would not necessarily pick up after the events of the first movie.
In a recent interview with Indie Wire's "Thompson on Hollywood" blog, Knight said, "I thought, 'why not? What fun.' It's not quite like the other, we're starting with clean slate. When they've signed off we're on."
For those unacquainted with the film, "World War Z" features the story of a post apocalyptic world plagued with people infected with a zombie-like virus. As big and small cities both crumbled under the pressure of the epidemic, Gerry Lane (Pitt) had to travel around the world to search for a cure.
Unfortunately, he was unable to succeed in the task, and the climax of the movie saw him discovering a way to mask or hide the uninfected from those carrying the virus. However, it was implied that his character would still continue searching for the cure, Cinema Blend noted. This open-ended conclusion of the film provides a lot of possible materials for a sequel.
Pitt, who produced "World War Z" as well as the upcoming sequel, stated that the production team is working hard to get the script right. Speaking with Variety back in 2013, he said, "We're certainly talking about it, yeah. We have so many ideas on the table from the time we spent just developing this thing, and finding out how zombie worlds work."
He added: "We have so many ideas, and so much information that we think we got a lot of stuff in mind from or to. So we're going to do our best and see what we get out of it. We got to get the script right first to determine if we go further."
Despite mixed reviews from movie critics, "World War Z" earned $540 million in theaters worldwide, with a production budget of $190 million, Cinema Blend noted. The film was originally planned to be a trilogy, with Pitt saying during a promotion that they "could barely get a fraction of the book in [the movie]."
According to IGN, "World War Z 2" is scheduled to begin filming in October of this year, with Juan Antonio Bayona in the director's chair. The sequel is expected to follow the events in the novel by Max Brooks which the movie was based on.
