The spinoff series of AMC's "The Walking Dead" will soon hit televisions, and along with that come news reports and scoops for the upcoming zombie drama. Creator Robert Kirkman finally discussed what's in store for fans once the show airs, and according to the comic book writer, the companion series will be "startlingly different." Here's what Kirkman revealed to Entertainment Weekly.
The spinoff series is a show about family, specifically a different type of family which has not been explored in "The Walking Dead" yet.
"What we're trying to do with 'The Walking Dead' spinoff is keep the story as familiar as possible for people that love 'The Walking Dead,' so you'll get the kind of things that you expect from a 'Walking Dead' story," Kirkman said. "But, at the same time, we'll want to tell these stories in a completely different way with completely different people in a completely different setting that's going to make for a fundamentally different show. I think the look and feel of 'The Walking Dead' spinoff is going to be startlingly different."
The companion series will star Kim Dickens as Nancy Tomkins, "a thirtysomething single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there's an edge to her," according to Variety. Cliff Curtis is also onboard as a guidance counselor in a relationship with Dickens' character. Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey will portray Nancy's children from a previous marriage.
Kirkman went on to confirm to Entertainment Weekly that no characters from the original comic book will appear on the upcoming show. It is also not necessary to watch "The Walking Dead" in order for viewers to get caught up on the spinoff series.
"We want it to be a new show that can stand on its own," he said. "You could watch 'The Walking Dead' spinoff if you've never watched an episode of 'The Walking Dead' and get a really great, rich, fulfilling experience out of it. It has to be a show that can stand on its own. I think that's what we've accomplished, and we start filming in a couple of days. I'm really excited."
The spinoff will take place in Los Angeles, which is a stark contrast from the Atlanta setting of "The Walking Dead." The companion series will come about during the same zombie apocalypse in AMC's popular zombie drama, Variety noted.
Kirkman is one of the show's executive producers, alongside Dave Erickson, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert. Erickson will also serve as the showrunner. Shooting is expected to start early this year, with scenes featuring a school and a hospital, according to E! Online.
