While a lot of tabloids sensationalize stories to attract attention, so far, none of them went as far as In Touch did with Bruce Jenner as they photoshopped his face on a female body, headlined: "Bruce's Story: My Life as a Woman."
According to the Inquistr, the controversy started with the photo of the former Olympian on the cover of the magazine, wearing lipstick and women's clothing. Later on, it was revealed that the original photo was that of British actress, Stephanie Beacham.
The cover ignited controversy from readers, including author and transgender rights activist Janet Mock, who referenced Leelah Alcorn, a 17-year-old transgender, who committed suicide. Mock said, "By publishing this cover, InTouch Weekly tells its 400,000 readers that it is acceptable to assume someone's gender, scrutinize their body and publicly shame them in the process. It is this destructive thinking that pushes trans people deeper into isolation. It is this thinking that leads many to justify the disproportionate violence trans women of color face. It is this thinking that convinces a 17-year-old girl that her only option for peace is to leap in front of a truck."
British Comedian Russell Brand also weighed in about the issue through a YouTube video, saying, "It sanctions people judgmental and cruel towards transgender folk. This is mainstream media: the established form of communication and judgment. This is bullying. Stop! Bruce Jenner is a human being!"
But perhaps none is as angry as Bruce's former wife, Kris Jenner. According to the New York Daily News, sources close to the Kardashian-Jenner clan said, "Kris has cut off contact with In Touch, Life & Style and all Bauer publications. They won't get any 'real' quotes from the family, and will be banned from Kardashian-Jenner red carpets, events, premieres and fashion events."
The issue, however, is far from just the photo of Bruce being female. The website also noted that while Bauer declined to comment about the controversial cover, the publishers from the magazine don't care about the Kardashians any more and felt that their partnership with the clan has ended long ago.
The source from the publishers said, "In Touch doesn't care if the Kardashians don't speak to them. They felt betrayed anyway, that the family used them to get famous, then dumped them."
However, just because they can't get direct quotes from the reality TV family, that does not mean that they will stop writing about them, at least, according to the insider.
What do you think about the In Touch cover? Has it gone too far?
