Jennifer Lopez has been active in the entertainment industry since the early 90s. Whether it's acting in movies or recording upbeat pop music, the Latina beauty has proven why she remains as one of the most well-known personalities in show business. But like any successful stars, J. Lo also had her fair share of struggles, especially when she was just starting to make a name for herself in Hollywood.
In an interview with Telemundo anchor José Díaz Balart to promote her upcoming film, "The Boy Next Door," Lopez revealed how she battled role stereotypes when her career was just blossoming. Díaz Balart relived his "Enfoque" interview with the singer-actress, especially the one moment when she talked about her early career. Here's what the anchor said, as quoted by Latin Times.
According to Díaz Balart, Lopez confessed that it angered her how Hollywood viewed her fellow Latinos. She said that every role offered to her was Hispanic, but it usually fits the Hollywood stereotypes of her race which includes cleaning lady, nanny, or housemaid. Since then, Lopez opted to choose roles that would end that cliché.
"What was most surprising was that she told me how angry it made her to see the way Hollywood saw Latinos and therefore started rejecting roles that were given to her or had anything to do with her roots," he said.
The public would remember that Lopez previously starred in "Selena" and "Maid in Manhattan," movies which fit the typecast Hollywood puts into Hispanics.
Díaz Balart added that the star also talked about her children, and how she wants them to grow up loving themselves and "to be happy and complete human beings." Aside from these, the singer-actress explained how she reached her dreams and succeeded.
"She said she thinks about her past often and how she had dreams that seemed impossible, and even she's asked herself how it is she's been able to achieve them: Lots of work, focus and dedication," the journalist further explained, as quoted by Latin Times.
The whole interview will air on January 18 at 1/12 PM CT on Telemundo.
