"Game of Thrones" will return to HBO on April 12, 2015, and even though that's still a few months way, fans are already excited about what the show's fifth season has to offer in terms of storylines and its beloved characters. Recent spoiler reports are claiming that a huge plot change will happen between Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel).
E! Online spoke to Emmanuel at an HBO party to discuss her character's continuing closeness with Clarke's Daenerys in the show. When asked what fans should expect from them in the upcoming season, Emmanuel teased, "We see Daenerys being queen and what comes with that, so it's not always smooth sailing but she's got her confidante and friend Massandei to help her along the way."
Some reports claim that the deepening relationship between Daenerys and Missandei could lead to a lesbian and sexual relationship, which is not at all uncommon judging on the show's premise.
However, Latin Times reports that this plot is highly unlikely. "A Song of Ice and Fire," a series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin which "Game of Thrones" is based on, does not exactly feature a sexual relationship between Daenerys and Missandei. In the novels, Missandei is basically a child (only 10 years old), and the Mother of Dragons is a few years older than her. Daenerys freed Missandei from slavery, and since then, they formed a close bond which is similar to a mother-daughter relationship.
But Latin Times also pointed out that there is a possibility that HBO would stray away from the books' path. In the show, Daenerys and Missandei are portrayed by much older actresses.
"While the book also inhibits several love scenes, the series brings these racy scenes to life, rarely sparing one detail, meaning that showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are not shy," the news outlet notes.
There is also a scene in the books when Daenerys was sexually aroused upon kissing Jorah Mormont, which then led to her handmaiden Irri assisting her as she pleasures herself. Latin Times points out that "Game of Thrones" tends to "consolidate multiple minor characters plot lines into one," so Missandei could replace Irri in that particular plot.
These are all speculations for now. Until then, fans would still have to wait for "Game of Thrones" to air to see if a romantic storyline is in Daenerys' and Missandei's future.
