Kirkland Municipal Court Judge Michael Lambo dismissed the domestic violence assault charges against soccer star Hope Solo on Tuesday, a week before the trial was scheduled to begin, according to reports.
The goalkeeper for the U.S. women's national soccer team was previously charged with two counts of fourth degree assault which stemmed from an alleged altercation with her half-sister and nephew during a party last June, ESPN said in a report.
According to the same article, Judge Lambo dismissed the charges against the soccer superstar despite her absence during the hearing due to her training camp schedule. Solo's lawyer, Todd Maybrown, "sought to have the charges dismissed on the grounds that the alleged victims refused to be interviewed about the case," ESPN added.
Reports indicated that last week, Lambo signed a renewed order for deposition because Solo's nephew and half-sister did not show up during their supposed interviews. It was explained by ESPN that the two victims were not able to show up because they did not receive subpoenas from the court and there was no ample time to inform them of the schedule of their appearance and interview.
In a statement posted on her Facebook account, Solo stated:
"Today's decision brings closure to what has been one of the most difficult and emotionally draining times of my life. I always had faith that once the facts of the case were presented, I would be cleared of all charges and I am so happy and relieved to finally have it all behind me.
"I am so grateful for the support of my husband Jerramy, my mother, grandmother and members of my extended family who surrounded me with love and reassurance each and every day. I would also like to thank my incredible fans who consistently sent positive, heartfelt messages of encouragement and kept my spirits lifted throughout this entire ordeal. I look forward to joining my team with a clear mind to train, compete, and help bring a World Cup title to the U.S. in 2015."
Discussing the details of the case, The New York Times reported that based on court documents, Solo claimed that she sustained a concussion when she was hit on the head with a broomstick by her 17-year-old nephew.
The report added that the nephew got angry at what Solo said prompting him to attack her with the broom.
But Solo's relatives maintained that the soccer player was the first to attack, ESPN reported.
