"Minecraft" developer Mojang announced in a recent post that players will soon be able to change their in-game names. Though readers were told that they can expect such ability "in the near future," the post went on to reveal that it takes effect on Feb. 4, 2015. That leaves us with three weeks of wait, if you're one of those who contemplate on switching monikers.

The good news about this name change feature is that it won't cost a single penny, nor does it have other requirements. The announcement specified that all you need is a Mojang account, "If you currently sign in to Minecraft with an email address, you're all good!"

New users can register for a Mojang account here. Existing users can log in here. If you've got one of those old, Premium "Minecraft" accounts, there's no need to worry as they may be migrated into a Mojang account here.

However, as with any identity measures, the new feature comes with several limitations.

First, users must note that names can't be changed as often as wanted. If you've been acquainted with Facebook's name change policy (for instance), a period of 60 days should pass before successfully making another modification. For "Minecraft," Mojang granted a span of 30 days before changing nicks.

Duplications are also not permitted, and we're expecting that the system automatically rejects them. This means you can't steal somebody else's name, no matter how bad you want it. Only when the current user ditches it, one stands a chance of claiming so. Tip: Once your desired moniker becomes available, make sure you haven't changed your name in the last 30 days so nobody else can take it.

The "Minecraft" world is a thriving community, and a community may not always be peaceful. Banned users stay banned, even if they take advantage of the upcoming name change feature.

Mojang also clarified that they are not responsible for either the mods or servers so users will have to ask the mod maker or server owner to check on how the new feature works with mods. However, the developer maintained that mods should easily support it.

In another update, Mojang revealed that "Minecraft: Pocket Edition" has been bought over 30 million times. To celebrate this feat, the developer plans to hold a live Q&A session online and anyone can participate by throwing questions on this Reddit thread.

You can purchase and download "Minecraft: Pocket Edition" here (iTunes) and here (Play Store).
