Gina Rodriguez gave an emotional speech during the 72nd Golden Globe Awards when she accepted her Best TV Actress in a Series for her work on "Jane the Virgin."
"Wow. Thank you God for making me an artist," the 30-year-old actress tearfully said when she went on stage, Fox News Latino reported. "Thank you to my mom and my dad who told me to dream big and never stop dreaming. This award is so much more than myself - it represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes," she added.
"Jane the Virgin," which revolves around a young woman who was accidentally inseminated at a clinic, struggled in the ratings game, according to a report from Latin Times. The Golden Globes nomination was reportedly a big surprise for the CW series, even though the show already won at the People's Choice Awards in the Favorite New TV Comedy category.
Fox News Latino also noted that the network announced a second season for "Jane the Virgin" hours before the Golden Globe Awards show.
Latino pride
Rodriguez went on to thank her family in her acceptance speech. She also shared a very important life lesson which she learned from her father.
"My father used to tell me to say every morning, 'Today's going to be a great day, and I can, and I will'," the winning actress concluded, as quoted by Latin Times. "Well, daddy, today is a great day. I can, and I did."
This is Rodriguez's first Golden Globe nomination. She went against Lena Dunham ("Girls"), Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Veep"), Edie Falco ("Nurse Jackie"), and Taylor Schilling ("Orange Is the New Black"). According to Fox News Latino, "Rodriguez is the second Latina actress to win an award in this category". It can be recalled that America Ferrera ("Ugly Betty") won the honor back in 2007.
Some of Hollywood's Latino stars tweeted their congratulations to Rodriguez, including pop star Demi Lovato, actress Eva Longoria, and Wilmer Valderrama, the news outlet reported. Director Robert Rodriguez also tweeted kind words for the actress, saying, "BIG Congratulations to @HereIsGina on her #GoldenGlobes win for Jane the Virgin. Much deserved and inspirational!"
Actress Zoe Saldana also praised her fellow Latina actress, tweeting: "@HereIsGina Ginaaaaa! Congratulations beba! Wow que orgullo, I'm so proud of you. Your speech brought me to tears! #GoldenGlobeAwards2015."
As for how she prepared for the awards show, Rodriguez told E! Online that she went boxing with her dad and had breakfast with her mom. When asked about her date for the night (her eldest sister), the actress said, "She helped me pay for college. She's one of my heroes and I love her."
"Jane the Virgin" airs Monday, 9 PM, on The CW.
