Roger Federer's Brisbane International title this year is a memorable one for him as he was able to seal his 1,000th career match win.

This record, according to AP Sports, is a feat for tennis players as he is the only player after Jimmy Connors who had 1,253 wins and Ivan Lendl who won 1,071 times to do such thing in the professional men's leg.

''Clearly it's a special day for me, winning a title plus getting to the magic number of 1,000. It feels very different to any other match I've ever won. All those (milestone) numbers didn't mean anything to me, but for some reason 1,000 means a lot because it's such a huge number. Just alone to count to 1,000 is going to take a while," Federer told AP Sports after beating third-seeded Milos Raonic in a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-4 victory.

CNN discussed that Federer was clearly leading the game when Raonic fired back, scoring seven straight points, tying the game with both of them winning a set. But it noted that Federer was able to gain his ground during the third set and won the game.

This victory is considered to be something he really needed before competing at the Australian Open in Melbourne which will start on Jan. 19.

During the awarding ceremony, CNN said that Feder was handed a trophy by Roy Emerson and another special award for his 1,000th win.

"To get to 1,000 wins in front of you two greats means a lot to me. I'll never forget this moment," Federer said in the CNN report.

He also explained to AP Sports that he was proud of himself for winning a hard match against an equally-talented opponent.

''Looking back it's almost nicer winning this way through a tight match with nerves and humid conditions against a great player in a final. It means so much more than just running away with it. I guess I was much more happy having to go three sets in the end," Federer added.

For his part, Raonic explained that he gave his best foot forward to beat Federer for the second time but it was clear that he did not have the skill to do it this time.

''It's great to see because you know how much he's done for tennis. He turned pro I think it was like 10 years before me. It's great to see everything he's done for tennis. The fans he's brought, the media attention he's brought ... he's definitely the most popular tennis player of all time," Raonic was quoted by AP Sports as saying.

This is an entirely different year for Federer as the previous Brisbane International tournament was a total upset for him when he lost to Lleyton Hewitt in the finals.
