Patrick Jane got a step closer to catching the murderous Red John on the latest episode of "The Mentalist."

The episode "The Great Red Dragon" opens in the aftermath of the explosion, which blew up with Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and all of the Red John suspects in it. Jane lived, as well three of the Red John suspects.

One of the suspects, Gale Bertram (Michael Gaston), tries to murder Jane while he's in the hospital, but Lisbon (Robin Tunney) is able to stop him before he can slit his throat. The team then pegs Bertram as the elusive Red John. Lisbon calls the police and tells them that Bertram is Red John.

While Reede (Drew Powell), another suspect, is getting bullets removed in the hospital, police outside say "tiger, tiger," to one another and ask if Reede is in the hospital.

Later, Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) get into a shootout with police officers who have captured Reede. Van Pelt calls Jane to let him know, and he says to check the shoulder of one of the officers. The officer also has a three dot tattoo on his shoulder. They bring the officer in for questioning.

Jane interrogates the officer and finds out that the three dot tattoo is the initiation into a secret organization, and that "tiger, tiger" is the secret code to let other members of the organization know that someone is a part of it.

It then cuts to Bertram taking out money and fake passports, which was being held for him in the back of a store. Bertram and another officer want to kill Reede because he ratted them out.

Cho (Tim Kang) arrives on the scene and saves Reede. Reede tells Jane and Lisbon about how he got involved in the organization, which is called "The Blake Association" after 18th century poet and artist William Blake. ("Tiger, tiger" is a reference to a Blake poem.) Reede says he was addicted to pills while on a case, and accidentally shot a little girl. A detective then reached out to him and eliminated all of the evidence, absolving him of any wrongdoing. Lisbon asks him who's in charge of the organization, but Reede says he doesn't know. However, Reede does tell them that Red John is part of the organization. Reede swears to Jane that he is not Red John, and Jane believes him.

Jane then announces to the station that Bertram is the primary Red John suspect, and that he's armed and dangerous.

Jane and Lisbon go after Bertram, who is drinking (and murdering, again) at a bar. They arrive at a house near the bar, where they find that the entire SWAT squad was called in--by Bertram. Jane believes that Bertram is one of the SWAT officers in disguise. One of the SWAT officers gets away, but Jane fails to notice it. Bertram is therefore able to make his escape.

At the end of the episode, an official arrives at the station and tells everyone that they are relieved of their duties. He says that Jane blew it by failing to catch Red John. But Jane says he's not quitting; he's going to continue his search until he can track down Bertram.

On the next episode, simply titled "Red John," Jane's hunt for the killer who murdered his wife and daughter will finally come to a stunning conclusion.

In "Red John," "Patrick Jane finally comes face-to-face with Red John, the serial killer he's tracked since the madman murdered his wife and daughter. For 10 years, Jane has doggedly hunted his nemesis in his search for justice."

Entertainment Weekly revealed that when the show returns after the Red John saga's conclusion, Jane will be a bit older. The show will have a big time jump of two years starting with the Dec. 1 episode.
