Manny Pacquiao believes he should enter the ring with a mentality of an underdog in his upcoming WBO International Welterweight fight against Brandon Rios on Saturday, at Venetian Macao in Macau, China.
Though betting bookmakers are showing the other way around, Pacquiao stressed that he's the underdog in his showdown with the hard-hitting Rios, given his opponent's advantage in size, height and age.
The 34-year-old Pacquiao is coming off back-to-back setbacks last year at the hands of Tim Bradley (Split Decision) and arch-rival Juan Manuel Marquez (6th round TKO). Meanwhile, Rios is coming off the first loss of his career at the hands of Mike Alvarado last summer.
With both fighters hungry to get back to their winning ways, Saturday's rumble is expected to provide action and drama in the gambling-capital of Asia.
Vintage Pacquiao
Pacquiao considered his training camp in preparation for Rios fight as the best ever in terms of the numbers of weeks he allotted for it.
The Pacman started warming up in early August and engaged in sparring sessions as early as September, making him 100 percent ready in this make-or-break clash.
Yet, despite feeling much better than his previous trainings, Pacquiao insisted that he won't go for the knockout against Rios because the former lightweight champion is certainly not a pushover. However, he promised everyone to show the same punching dynamo that dominated boxing in the later years of the last decade.
With three days to go before fight night, there are reports that Pacquiao will be wearing his Rosary again, as he had in his big fights with Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. The fighter who was converted to a Born Again Christian last year, decided not to wear Roman Catholic's greatest symbol of faith in his fight with Bradley and Marquez.
Forgive and Forget
The Filipino champ said he's not affected by the recent altercation between his camp, led by chief trainer Freddie Roach, and Rios' training staffs, particularly trainer Robert Guerrero and former Pacman's conditioning guru Alex Ariza.
Pacquiao encouraged everyone to forgive and move on, stressing that fights and trash-talking have no room in the sport.
"I have nothing to say. What happened today doesn't bother me. Business as usual," Pacquiao said during the press conference.
