For many of PlayStation Network's gamers, Christmas 2014 didn't turn out to be a very merry one, considering the outages attributed to the infamous Lizard Squad. As a result, Sony has announced a number of surprises on Thursday, geared to compensate for the holiday loss of PSN members.

Sony Network Entertainment vice president Eric Lempel wrote in a blog post, "Since access to PlayStation Network was impacted during the holidays, we wanted to show our appreciation for your patience..."

The first announced treat is aimed towards PlayStation Plus members. Accordingly, those who had active membership or free trial running on Dec. 25 will receive a membership extension worth five days.

For those who may not know, PlayStation Plus is a paid, premium service that grants PSN players access to a plethora of titles, online multiplayer and the ability to save games online, the Washington Post describes.

Sony hasn't confirmed when exactly the extension applies. However, the company assured that additional information will be posted on its official blog. Note that the extension will also be applied automatically, which means no further action is needed in order to qualify.

Meanwhile, those with membership or trial expiring before the extension's arrival will still receive the five-day treat upon Sony's notification.

The good news is, not only PS Plus folks will receive holiday treats from Sony, but all PSN members. Lempel informed that a 10% discount code, "good for a one-time discount off a total cart purchase," will be offered for a limited time in the PlayStation Store. Details are scarce at present, but again, the company said more information will be available "sometime this month [January]."

This discount serves as Sony's "thank you" to all PSN members.

Flashback to the events that happened on Christmas, Sony's PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live had been infested by outages, much to the dismay of eager players. As ABC News put it, the attacks perpetrated by the Lizard Squad were designed to flood both networks with surplus traffic.

This resulted to interference in connectivity, leaving players disappointed over not being able to access titles as desired.

NBC News cited the Lizard Squad's carol for PS rival Xbox, "Jingle bells jingle bells xbox got ran, oh my fun it is to troll of you mor**s ... hey!"

On Dec. 27, IGN reported that the Xbox Live core services for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 were up and running. The PSN went online for the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita too, however with expected "intermittency."
