"Downton Abbey" returns for its fifth season on January 4 9:00 pm ET on MASTERPIECE Classic on PBS, and fans should definitely get excited about what's in store for the period drama.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the fifth season will open in the year 1924, with a new Labor Party prime minister in the government making a speech on a radio contraption called the "wireless." The threat of the upper class and the lower class mingling together worries Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville). Edith (Laura Carmichael) is visiting her estranged child currently under the care of the Drewes.
Branson (Allen Leech), on the other hand, is still struggling with his current elevated status, which is a stark contrast from his humble beginnings. The Dowager Countess Violet (Maggie Smith) is currently nursing "a crush on a grizzled Russian man who flirted with her before she was married," Entertainment Weekly noted.
Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) is determined to live in the modern world and leave behind her tragic past where her late husband, Matthew (Dan Stevens), died in a car accident. According to Denver Post, the widow "wonders aloud to Anna (Joanne Froggatt) why courting couples don't test out the physical side of things before marriage."
This was then followed by her joining Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen) on a weekend getaway. Would certain precautions be taken by the duo during the short vacation? Viewers will find out on Sunday.
Drama is also present downstairs for the servants. Daisy (Sophie McShera) is intent on studying in the hopes of acquiring a middle-class job. Molesley (Kevin Doyle) is worried about aging, Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier) is still a bully, and Bates (Brendan Coyle) is doing whatever it takes to prevent his wife, Anna, from going to jail.
The fifth season will feature guest stars including Richard E. Grant, Anna Chancellor (Lady Anstruther), Rade Sherbedgia, Harriet Walter, and Peter Egan, according to Denver Post.
The show has been renewed for a sixth season, Nola reports.
According to The Independent, executive producer Gareth Neame said that the whole team is excited to push the show forward on the new season.
"We have had an amazing reaction to the storylines, acting and production values of 'Downton Abbey' this year and the whole team is thrilled to be moving ahead with a new season of the show," Neame said, as quoted by the news outlet. "This will provide audiences with a fresh opportunity to see what will befall our much loved characters."
