Star Wars Battlefront 3 was the biggest surprise announcement during the E3 conference in June, and many fans are eager to see what EA and developer DICE are able to do with the series. However, there has been some concern that EA, which now has exclusive rights to make games based on the beloved franchise, would get bogged down in movie tie-in games based on the upcoming trilogy of "Star Wars" films due to be released in the future.
EA's Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen spoke about the franchise at the UBS conference, and Gamespot is reporting that the executive had a rather blunt answer when asked about developing games based on the new films:
"We've done movie games over the years and we wanted to make sure that we weren't doing a movie game--a game based on the movie...The beauty of the Star Wars franchise is that it's so broad and so deep, you don't have to do a movie game--you can do a game that's very focused on the world that's been created around 'Star Wars.'"
This is a smart move by EA. Video games based on films have a less-than-stellar reputation. This is often due to the time constraints of releasing a game in time with the movie, which can lead to rushed deadlines and shoddy gameplay. Considering the big name studios EA is able to draw on, focusing on other less time restricted titles should pay off.
The Star Wars Battlefront title is being developed by DICE, and the developer has created DICE LA to handle games based on the series. In addition, Bioware and Visceral Games are also working on unnamed "Star Wars" games. While the new Battlefront reboot may be getting the most attention right now, Jorgensen stated that "Star Wars" fans can expect games based on the franchise for more than a decade to come:
"We had a long relationship obviously with Lucas on the original 'Star Wars,' and when Disney took over Lucas they really wanted to maintain a video game business around 'Star Wars'....They felt it was very valuable and a lot of people loved the games historically. And so they came to us because of our partnership, and they knew that we could help them develop really great games, and we struck what we believe is a fantastic deal which allows us to be able to build games in many different genres across multiple types of platforms over 10 years."
