“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has been a pleasant surprise. At first glance, it looks like nothing more than another “Office” or “Parks and Recreation” that takes place in a Brooklyn precinct. Who needs that? We’ve seen it a million times before. We’ve become so accustomed to the format that it’s no longer stimulating. It’s simply a brain numbing exercise, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as we need to zone out and enjoy mindless nonsense, but after so long, it’s time for something new.

Luckily “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has surprised critics and offers a fresh taste of television comedy. Now rolling into the thick of its first season, the show has received its most promising opportunity yet. The show will be airing after the Super Bowl to the biggest television audience of the year. The pressure is on.

Series co-creator Mike Schur needs to captivate his audience. He needs to wow them. He needs to make sure he hooks them within the first three minutes after the Super Bowl has ended, or they’re likely to change the channel, never to return.

“It's a little bit of an odd assignment because it's one of the biggest audiences that exists on television, and you want it to be something really big and fun and splashy, but also you want it to be a good sample for the show,” Shur said in a recent interview. “You just want it to be a good episode of the show that represents what the show is, because you don't want people to watch it and see a bunch of oil tankers exploding and people in car chases and crazy stuff, and then they tune in the next week and they're like, ‘This is not what I watched that week!’”

But Shur has confidence in his cast and writers, allowing him to rest at ease in the weeks prior to the big game. “I think the cast is really great,” he said. “You know, Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher, they have just the best on-screen chemistry in the world. It's like they're like Sam and Diane to me. Not in terms of their longevity or intensity or anything, but I really enjoy just watching them exist on-screen together.”

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” airs Tuesday nights on Fox. If you haven’t watched it yet, be sure to get your dose before the Super Bowl.
