Google has agreed to remove a satellite image from Google Maps that shows a young teenager's dead body after he was slain in 2009, following complaints from the boy's father.
Kevin Barrera,14, was beaten and shot to death in 2009 in an unsolved crime. The young boy's body was captured in photo taken by Google Maps, and the boy's father, Jose Barrera, told KTVU-TV in Oakland that the image brought back painful memories of the incident.
In the image, police are seen surrounding a body next to a bend in some railroad tracks. Though the photo was taken in 2009, the image of the young boy's body is still visible on Google Maps. However, in a statement to CNN, Vice President of Google Maps Brian McClendon declared that for the first time ever Google Maps is working to remove the image as quickly as possible out of respect for the family:
"Our hearts go out to the family of this young boy ...Google has never accelerated the replacement of updated satellite imagery from our maps before, but given the circumstances we wanted to make an exception in this case."
McClendon revealed that Google has been in contact with the Barrera family "to let them know we're working hard on the update," but explained that a replacement image could take up to eight days to appear on the app. Before Google agreed to remove the image, Jose Barrera stated that he planned to formally complain about the picture and take the matter to state lawmakers if the need arose.
Google Maps privacy page explains that users can ask Google to remove images found on Maps, Street View and Google Earth is they so choose:
"Your privacy and security are important to us...The Google Maps team takes a number of steps to help protect the privacy and anonymity of individuals when images are collected for Street View, including blurring faces and license plates. You can easily contact the Street View team if you see an image that should be protected or if you see a concerning image."
Users also have the option to "request the removal of images that feature inappropriate content (for example: nudity or violence)."
