It is sad to know that one of Hollywood's most enigmatic couples are no longer together, but despite splitting up after 13 years together, director Tim Burton and actress Helena Bonham-Carter remain in good terms, said Bonham-Carter's rep to People Magazine.

Bonham-Carter's rep told the magazine that the couple separated amicably earlier this year and have continued to co-parent their children, Billy Ray, 11, and daughter Nell, 7. "We would ask that you respect their privacy and that of their children during this time."

According to the Independent, Burton and Bonham-Carter met during filming of Burton's "Planet of the Apes" remake in 2001, in which Bonham-Carter played the role of the Senator's daughter, Ari.

They have been together since then and were known to collaborate extensively, working on nine films together during the course of their relationship. The Telegraph noted that Burton and Bonham-Carter's relationship was "remarkable for their artistic achievements" despite the unconventional romance - the two were noted to live in separate but conjoined houses in North London. According to the site, the series of homes were each decorated to their tastes, with a third one for their children and the live-in nanny.

Although this set-up raised eyebrows from fans and the media, it worked well for them, as BBC noted that Bonham Carter told the Guardian in 2010 that "It really is a great idea. You never have to compromise emotionally or feel invaded." Of course, as a couple, they still spend a lot of time together, with Bonham Carter noting, "He always visits, which is really touching. He's always coming over."

With their separation, it is not clear how much of the living arrangements will change. However, it is clear that the former couple remain friends: BBC reported that they were seen together earlier this week, watching "Cats the Musical" at the London Palladium.

E! News chronicled the films that the pair worked on while they were together, and following "Planet of the Apes" were "Big Fish" (2001), "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" (2004), "Corpse Bride" (2005), "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005), "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (2007), "Alice in Wonderland" (2010), "Dark Shadows" (2012), and "Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass" (2016).

"Through the Looking Glass" is the last project that Burton and Bonham Carter worked on as a couple (E! News noted that principal photography ended in October) but with their Hollywood magic and charm, hopefully, it won't be their last collaboration during the rest of their careers.

What do you think of the split?
